All Eyes on Gachagua as He Launches DCP Party

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to take centre stage on May 15, 2025, as he officially unveils his new political party, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

The event, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the party’s headquarters on Musa Gitau Road in Lavington, marks a pivotal moment in Gachagua’s political comeback and realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement follows Gachagua’s resignation from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on May 12, 2025, signaling a clear departure from President William Ruto’s camp. DCP, which was formally registered on February 3, 2025, is expected to serve as Gachagua’s new political platform as he seeks to rally support in the Mount Kenya region.

Until now, Gachagua and his team have kept details of the party under wraps to avoid early political friction. However, on May 14, he confirmed that he would reveal the party’s name the following day and urged supporters to remain patient as preparations for a national launch continue.

“What we are doing tomorrow is the unveiling. The official launch will come later,” Gachagua told The Nation, emphasizing that the party’s core principle is attentiveness to public sentiment, especially from the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking on Egesa FM on May 12, Gachagua highlighted DCP’s commitment to national inclusivity, revealing that the party’s leadership includes individuals from across the country. “Those calling me a tribalist will be surprised,” he said, naming a diverse team of officials already in place.

DCP’s identity is symbolized through its colours—green, brown, and black—and a logo featuring a hand touching an ear, representing a party that “listens to the ground.” The slogan, Kazi na Haki (Work and Justice), underscores its guiding philosophy.

The party’s national council includes prominent names such as Thomas Ratemo, Ado Yiembo, Mably Owino, Hussein Athman, Laura Njeri, Abdifatah Abdullahi, Joy Gatugi, Jeremiah Mong’eri, Joel Sang, John Maranga, Miriam Fredina Mariki, and Brenda Banjira Omusinda.

Gachagua, whose political message revolves around reconnecting with grassroots concerns, has claimed that UDA has lost touch with ordinary citizens. His decision to form DCP follows a highly publicized fallout with President Ruto and subsequent impeachment, leading many to speculate on his next political move.

The unveiling is expected to attract notable opposition leaders including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, signaling the potential for new political alliances.
