The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three traffic police officers following a sting operation targeting alleged bribery along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway in Kyumbi, Machakos County.
In a statement, the Commission said the officers were stationed at a local traffic base and are suspected of extorting money from motorists at a roadblock near Machakos Junction. One more officer who was reportedly present during the operation managed to escape and is currently being sought for questioning.
After the arrests, the suspects were taken to the EACC’s Lower Eastern regional office in Machakos, where they were processed and their statements recorded.
The EACC explained that the operation is part of its broader efforts to eliminate corruption in public service, particularly within law enforcement units that have frequent contact with the public. The Commission said the sting underscores its commitment to promoting integrity, accountability, and professionalism among officers.
According to the EACC, major transport corridors remain hotspots for corruption investigations due to persistent claims of illegal cash collection from motorists, especially on highways that play a critical role in the country’s economy.
The Nairobi–Mombasa Highway, one of Kenya’s busiest routes, links the capital to the Port of Mombasa and serves as a vital trade and transit corridor.
The Commission noted that tackling corruption within enforcement agencies is essential not only to deter misconduct but also to maintain public trust in institutions responsible for road safety and law enforcement. It added that bribery on highways weakens the rule of law and can increase transport costs for businesses and road users.

EACC also called on members of the public and public officers to report suspected corruption, emphasizing that combating graft requires cooperation between oversight bodies, government agencies, and citizens. Motorists were encouraged to report unethical behavior, as such information helps investigators gather credible evidence.
The arrests follow recent operations in which five other police officers were apprehended late last month in Sondu along the Kisumu–Kisii Highway and on the Likoni–Lungalunga Road. In the Sondu case, EACC said the arrests came after sustained surveillance prompted by numerous complaints from motorists and residents.
Investigators reported that the officers were caught actively demanding bribes from drivers, in some instances without inspecting vehicles or enforcing traffic laws.
