Kiharu Students to Pay Just Sh500 a Term

Senior day secondary school students in Kiharu Constituency will pay just Sh500 per term this year, benefiting more than 12,000 learners.

The announcement was made by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro during the annual launch of the Kiharu Masomo Bora programme, which supports Grade 10, Form Three, and Form Four students.

Through the initiative, students will continue to receive free lunches throughout the week, from Monday to Sunday, with chapati included on the last Friday of every month. In addition, Sh10 million from the NGCDF fund has been set aside to supply day secondary schools with revision materials.

Each school will also receive an extra Sh50,000 to fund co-curricular activities, eliminating the need for parents to make additional contributions. Furthermore, the MP announced that Sh50 million has been allocated through NGCDF for the construction of laboratories and libraries to enhance academic performance.

The programme also includes a teacher motivation component, under which top-performing teachers will be rewarded with trips. The best teachers per subject will spend a week in Mombasa, while principals of the best-performing and most improved schools in each ward will travel to Dubai. Those who have previously visited Dubai will have the option of going to Malaysia or another destination.

Charges for remedial lessons in the constituency have also been capped at Sh1,000 per term.

Nyoro added that students from other constituencies who have relatives in Kiharu are welcome to enroll in local day schools. He emphasized that no additional levies will be imposed, noting that the programme is driven by the belief that Kenya has the capacity to offer free education.

The MP urged the government to adopt policies that make education accessible to learners from all backgrounds, arguing that national development depends on education. He proposed the creation of a Sh30 billion education fund by reallocating Sh10 billion each from NGCDF, county governments’ equitable share, and the national budget to support free basic education, including a feeding programme.

Speaking to parents at Maragi Primary School, Nyoro stressed the need to stop using education as a political campaign tool.

Launched three years ago, the Kiharu Masomo Bora programme has eased the financial burden on many families who previously struggled to meet school fee requirements.
