Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed strong confidence in winning the chairperson position of the African Union Commission (AUC) in the upcoming elections.
Raila mentioned that after thorough preparation, he feels “very” confident about defeating his rivals.
“Our campaigns have been successful. We’ve campaigned across Africa, and we are certain we’ll receive votes from most African countries,” he said.
While not sharing specific details, Raila, speaking during a visit to Business Bay Square (BBS) mall in Eastleigh, emphasized that he has the necessary support and backing to secure the election.
He was joined by Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan, BBS chairperson Abdiweli Mohamed Hassan, and Eastleigh North Ward MCA Ahmad Dabar.
The highly anticipated elections are set for February 15-16, 2025, at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the 38th Heads of State and Government Summit. The election of six commissioners will take place from February 12-13. Raila will face off against Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. To win, a candidate needs to secure 32 out of 49 votes. While the AU has 55 member states, six are ineligible to vote.
Raila has already visited 40 countries across the continent. BBS is Africa’s largest shopping center, hosting over 1,500 retail stores offering a variety of goods, including fashion, electronics, and household items.
During a private meeting with the mall’s owner, Raila expressed admiration for the development’s growth and success. He highlighted how such projects are vital for shaping Kenya’s economic future, especially by creating jobs and enabling Kenya to compete globally.
The former prime minister noted that such investments could address youth unemployment and praised the developer’s efforts. “This shows it is possible in Kenya as well, not just in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Our people can achieve this, and with more developments like this in Kenya, Nairobi can transform,” he said.
Notable figures, including President William Ruto and Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, have also visited the mall. Raila assured the developer of his support in expanding their operations across Africa if he is elected.
