Opinion: Why TVET is the Future of Education

After receiving their results, many students face a crucial decision about what to do next. While university is often seen as the preferred path, enrolling in a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) school offers significant value and potential. TVET schools provide hands-on training in various fields, equipping students with practical skills directly relevant to the job market. For Form 4 leavers, TVET could be a key to a successful future.

Take Daniel, for instance. A bright student who enjoyed hands-on work, Daniel initially felt pressured to pursue higher education, as many of his peers did. However, after learning about TVET schools, he realized that a program in electrical engineering was more suited to his interests. At TVET, Daniel received practical training, using industry-standard tools and equipment, which gave him a competitive edge. While his friends were still in classrooms, Daniel gained real-world experience through internships, allowing him to secure a job at a reputable electrical company before graduating.

TVET schools offer practical, job-ready skills in high demand across industries like construction, IT, healthcare, and hospitality. Graduates are often able to enter the workforce sooner than university students, making them highly sought after. Additionally, TVET programs are typically more affordable, and their shorter duration allows students to start earning income sooner, without accumulating significant debt.

Besides job opportunities, TVET also provides the skills necessary to start a business. Many students, like Daniel, use their training to launch their own ventures. For example, Daniel’s dream of owning his own electrical company became a reality thanks to the technical and entrepreneurial skills he gained at TVET.

TVET programs adapt quickly to industry changes, ensuring students are prepared for emerging fields like renewable energy. In conclusion, TVET offers a practical, affordable alternative to university education, providing valuable skills for immediate employment or entrepreneurship. It’s a smart choice for students seeking a fulfilling and prosperous future.
