Enock Okero, the Speaker of the Nyamira County Assembly, has been removed from his position by the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) due to allegations of gross misconduct and other offenses.
This decision followed a vote where 23 MCAs backed the impeachment motion, while 11 chose to abstain.
Okero’s removal comes just two weeks after he was suspended by the assembly, during which he has made unsuccessful attempts to regain access to his office.
He is currently contesting his indefinite suspension in the Nyamira High Court, describing it as a “chaotic takeover.”
Recently, the assembly has faced considerable turmoil, with MCAs clashing over leadership roles. Last week, Okero was attacked with stones while trying to enter his office forcefully, prompting police to fire shots into the air and use tear gas to manage the crowd.
A faction of MCAs has stated that Okero is not welcome at the Assembly, referencing his suspension during a heated session, which led to the appointment of Thaddeus Nyabaro from Ekerenyo as acting Speaker.
Okero is accused of undermining assembly motions, particularly those intended to remove Governor Amos Nyaribo.
The situation worsened with a violent incident involving a security guard at the County Assembly and the burning of the home of Bomwagamo Ward MCA Julius Nyangana last Wednesday.
“This morning, we convened at the Assembly to start our proceedings, and the impeachment motion was raised due to the Speaker’s gross misconduct and various corruption allegations,” stated Julius Matwere, MCA for Bonyamatuta Ward.
The assembly witnessed both celebration and conflict as MCAs voiced their opinions for and against the impeachment.
