US Embassy Urges Caution as Kenya Protests Escalate

The US Embassy in Kenya has issued a security advisory to American citizens, urging them to avoid areas where protests are occurring due to safety concerns.

The embassy highlighted that protests are expected, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in city centers and main streets.

They advised Americans to stay informed about local traffic conditions through media updates, avoid large gatherings, and ensure their vehicles are secure by keeping doors and windows locked.

Additionally, the advisory recommended notifying friends and family of their whereabouts, reviewing personal security plans, and carrying copies of their US passport and current Kenyan visa.

The protests, originally peaceful, have frequently turned violent, resulting in injuries and deaths, with reports indicating at least 43 fatalities. The unrest began in response to the Finance Bill 2024 and has evolved into broader calls, including demands for the resignation of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

In response to the demonstrations, President Ruto withdrew the controversial bill, proposed austerity measures, and disbanded his entire cabinet, including the Attorney General.

He accused the US-based Ford Foundation of funding what he described as anarchic activities and violent protests aimed at destabilizing Kenya’s democracy. Ruto condemned these actions during a public address in Nakuru, questioning the motives behind such funding and its impact on the nation.
