DCI Seeks Public Help in Anti-Tax Protest Looting Probe

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is seeking public assistance to identify individuals involved in looting during protests against the Finance Bill.

Surveillance footage captured several suspects breaking into and stealing from multiple businesses.

The DCI, through its Imaging and Acoustic Unit at the National Forensic Laboratory, has retrieved numerous CCTV recordings showing individuals committing criminal acts under the guise of peaceful protests.

In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI mentioned that while some perpetrators have been apprehended and presented in court, others remain at large, potentially planning further unlawful activities. They urged the public to help identify these suspects seen in the CCTV footage.

um. Following clashes resulting in fatalities and the storming of parliament, Ruto announced on Wednesday the withdrawal of the controversial finance bill that initially sparked the demonstrations.

The protests, initially peaceful and led by Generation Z, escalated into violence on Tuesday when police fired live rounds at demonstrators outside parliament, leading to the complex being breached and partly damaged by fire.

Ruto acknowledged the public sentiment and pledged to engage with the youth, marking a notable shift from his earlier characterization of some protesters as criminals.

“I have decided not to sign the 2024 finance bill, and it will consequently be withdrawn,” Ruto declared during a press briefing, acknowledging the voice of the people.

He emphasized the need for dialogue with the younger generation, reflecting a change in approach from his previous comments.
