The Senate observed a moment of silence to honor the lives lost during protests, expressing mourning for those who died amid demonstrations against the Finance Bill.
Led by Speaker Amason Kingi, Senators solemnly paid their respects, acknowledging the tragic events that led to these losses.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to recent events. It is imperative for us, as a legislative body, to reflect on these occurrences,” Speaker Kingi remarked. He emphasized the need for introspection among leaders to effectively address the concerns raised over the past weeks.
“The issues highlighted by protesters cannot be disregarded,” he continued, underscoring the Senate’s role in advocating for counties and local governments at grassroots levels.
Kingi stressed the importance of confronting present challenges with strong leadership and governance. During the session, the Senate urged the National Police to exercise restraint when handling peaceful demonstrators. They also called for the release of individuals arrested for their involvement in protests against the 2024 Finance Bill.
Furthermore, the Senate called upon the government to cover hospital bills and funeral costs for those injured or killed during the protests. They urged the judiciary to expedite cases related to the enactment of the Finance Bill, signaling their commitment to addressing the underlying issues.
