DPP Renson Ingonga and CJ Martha Koome expressed sorrow over the passing of Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti.
Magistrate Kivuti was fatally shot at Makadara Law Courts shortly after issuing a ruling in a case involving a policeman’s wife on Thursday afternoon.
Chief Justice Koome confirmed that Magistrate Kivuti passed away from injuries sustained in the shooting incident.
DPP Ingonga extended condolences to Kivuti’s family and emphasized her significant contributions to the nation.
He described Magistrate Kivuti as a committed and principled judicial figure who upheld fairness and justice, earning admiration from her colleagues and the public.
Both Koome and Ingonga lamented the tragic circumstances of her death.
Chairman Eric Kivuva of the Law Society of Kenya Nairobi branch also conveyed condolences and urged prompt and thorough investigations into the incident.
Magistrate Kivuti died at Nairobi Hospital on Friday, where she had been transferred for specialized treatment after the shooting.
She had sustained gunshot wounds to her hip and chest during the attack at the courthouse.
The Judiciary reported that the shooting occurred after she canceled the bond of a defendant who had absconded without satisfactory explanation.
The assailant, Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, was subsequently shot dead by other officers present, leading to injuries to three additional officers.
An urgent appeal for blood donations was made in an effort to save Magistrate Kivuti’s life.
