CS Kuria announced that the government will directly pay Sh6.8 billion to coffee farmers as part of their debt waiver, bypassing lenders.
He clarified that it’s the responsibility of lenders to pursue repayment from defaulting farmers using methods like Paybill.
Kuria stressed that the government will no longer act as a debt collector and emphasized that future loans for farmers will come exclusively from the Cherry Advance Fund.
Initially, cooperatives and creditors were instructed to submit farmers’ debt details for verification.
The Cabinet approved the waiver to alleviate coffee farmers nationwide of historical debt burdens, aiming to implement it promptly.
