Ten people have lost their lives following a late-night road accident at Karai along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
The crash happened at around 1:00am on Monday after a Nairobi-bound Greenline bus was involved in a head-on collision with a Nanyuki Cabs shuttle that was heading to Nakuru.
Nine victims died at the scene, including eight passengers from the shuttle and a young child who was travelling in the bus.
By Monday morning, authorities confirmed the death toll had risen to ten, while five others were left in critical condition.
A total of 35 injured passengers, among them five children, were admitted to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.
The accident occurred at the same stretch of road where former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died a few weeks ago.

Naivasha Sub-County Police Commander Wilson Sigei confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary reports indicate the bus driver was overtaking when the crash occurred.

He noted that the section of the highway is notorious for speeding motorists.
Eyewitnesses reported that a saloon car exiting Eagol Petrol Station suddenly joined the highway, forcing the bus driver to swerve before colliding head-on with the shuttle.

Meanwhile, some bus passengers claimed the driver appeared drowsy from Nakuru and raised concerns about his driving.
They alleged that two conductors stayed close to him in an attempt to keep him alert.
