Tragic Incident: Woman with Baby Leaps into River in Kirinyaga

The community of Kabiro-ini village in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, was rocked by shock and sorrow when a 29-year-old woman tragically took her own life by leaping into River Nyamindi with her 5-year-old daughter strapped to her back.

According to her uncle Stephen Maembe, the woman, identified as Moreen Wangui Munene, made the fateful decision for reasons yet unknown. The heart-wrenching event was witnessed by a watchman from Kainamoi coffee factory who, despite raising an alarm, was unable to prevent the tragedy.

The woman’s grandfather, Ngombo Kuruma, recounted that she had been washing clothes outside before abruptly vanishing with her child, catching the family off guard as they were indoors. Kuruma, a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church, was preparing for church when he received the devastating news.

Contrary to expectations, Fridah Njoki, the grandmother, revealed that Wangui had visited her just the week before and had shown no signs of distress. Njoki mentioned that Wangui lived with her parents in Embu, where her mother worked in civil service and her father was a contractor. The motive behind her drastic actions remains a mystery to those who knew her.

Wachira, the Gichugu sub-county Police Commander, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations were underway. Police, along with local residents, were at the river attempting to recover the bodies, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
