Newly Appointed CDF Kahariri Surveys Mai Mahiu Flood Devastation, Death Toll at 58

General Charles Kahariri, the newly appointed Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), made a visit to the victims of the flooding in Mai Mahiu on Saturday, May 4, 2024, marking his inaugural assignment since assuming the position on May 2.

During his visit, Gen Kahariri assessed the ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating flooding that resulted in loss of lives, displacement of residents, and extensive damage to infrastructure. He was briefed on the progress by Major General John Nkomo, who serves as the Commander of the National Floods Coordination Centre.

Accompanied by Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Gen Kahariri observed the joint efforts of the Kenya Defence Forces and various other agencies, including ministries and departments, in the search and recovery operations. The collective efforts have led to the recovery of 58 bodies, with 50 individuals still reported missing.

The victims, comprising adults and juveniles, have been tragically affected by this disaster, which occurred due to a tunnel blockage along the Meter Gauge Railway, resulting in a burst of water that swept through Kamuchira village and Mai Mahiu.

Gen Kahariri emphasized the KDF’s role in raising awareness among communities prone to flooding, urging them to relocate to safer areas. He reiterated the importance of collaboration among agencies to effectively address such crises and ensure the safety of citizens.

Additionally, Gen Kahariri visited displaced victims temporarily sheltered at Ngeya Girls Secondary School and inspected the ongoing preparations for a new rescue center to accommodate those affected.

The deployment of KDF resources aligns with their secondary role of assisting other government agencies during emergencies to protect the lives of Kenyan citizens. Governor Kihika expressed gratitude for the KDF’s support, which has significantly contributed to the search and recovery efforts.

President William Ruto and Deputy Rigathi Gachagua also visited the area separately to offer condolences to the affected families. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of continued rainfall in the region, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and preparedness.
