Kitui, Makueni To Remain Dry With Machakos Being Among 33 Counties To Experience Heavy Rainfall

The Ministry of Interior, based on advice from the Kenya Meteorological Department, has identified 33 counties slated to encounter significant rainfall ranging from heavy to very heavy this  Saturday throughout the country. Thunderstorms will accompany the intense rainfall.

Among the areas listed for heavy to very heavy rainfall is Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The Central region, including Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, and Nyandarua, will be affected.

In the Rift Valley, counties like Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia, and Narok are included. Additionally, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, and Trans Nzoia counties in the Western region will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.

In the Lake Victoria Basin, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, and Homa Bay are expected to be affected. In the Eastern region, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, and Marsabit counties will also see heavy rainfall.

The ministry has warned of potential flooding in low-lying, riparian, and urban areas, as well as the risk of landslides/mudslides in regions with steep slopes, escarpments, and ravines.

Most parts of the North Eastern region, specifically Isiolo, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera counties, and the South Eastern region (Kitui, Makueni, Taita, Taveta, Tana River) are expected to remain generally dry.

However, continuous heavy rains in the Central region and the potential overflow of the Seven Forks Dams could lead to flooding in the Tana Delta, impacting Garissa, Tana River, and Lamu Counties.

Despite sunny intervals in the Coast region, Tropical Cyclone Hidaya is anticipated to bring strong winds and large ocean waves, particularly affecting Kwale and Kilifi, with heavy rainfall expected to begin on Sunday, May 5th.
