Two police officers stationed at a police base in Bungoma County have been apprehended on suspicion of involvement in bribery.
The officers allegedly solicited a bribe in exchange for releasing a motorcycle they had seized at the base, claiming it was stolen property.
Eric Ngumbi, the spokesperson for the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects will face charges under the Bribery Act on Wednesday.
They are set to appear before the Bungoma Anti-Corruption Court.
Currently, the suspects are held at the EACC Bungoma Regional Office for processing and will later be transferred to Bungoma Police Station for arraignment.
The arrests follow the Director of Public Prosecutions’ agreement with the Commission’s recommendations to prosecute the suspects.
EACC disclosed that another officer involved in the alleged misconduct is at large and urged them to surrender themselves to the EACC Bungoma Regional Office.
These developments occurred shortly after the Commission apprehended another police officer on Friday for purportedly extorting Sh30,000 from a complainant.
The male officer was apprehended at a liquor store after allegedly demanding the amount from the complainant to release two brothers he had detained since Thursday without properly documenting their arrest in the Occurrence Book (OB).
These arrests reflect a concerning trend of extortion amid pervasive corruption within the police force.
EACC has urged citizens to report such incidents and called on police leaders to ensure that officers under their supervision abstain from criminal and unethical behavior.
