He mentioned that Kenyan and Ethiopian authorities are collaborating to address the issues at the border.
“Discussions are ongoing to find solutions to the border challenges, and we are partnering with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to resolve the matter,” Murkomen said.
He made these remarks on Sunday during a church service and peacebuilding meeting at Ngoron Full Gospel Churches of Kenya in Tiaty, Baringo County.
Murkomen reassured the public that the government is dedicated to addressing the issues affecting the Kenyan and Ethiopian communities living at the border.
“There’s no need for concern. We will take all necessary actions to protect our people and restore order at the border,” he stated.
“Currently, calm has returned to the region, and efforts are being made to maintain law and order there.”
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja issued a statement saying that the Turkana County Security team, in collaboration with Ethiopian security forces, is on the ground to verify the reports and take appropriate legal action.
He urged the affected communities to remain calm and avoid actions that could worsen the situation, while assuring that authorities remain committed to upholding law and order.
On Saturday evening, a clash occurred between Turkana and Dassanach fishermen at Lopemukat Common Waters, located along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
At least 20 fishermen were killed in an attack by gunmen believed to be from Ethiopia at the Todonyang border in Turkana County.
Several villagers were also injured, in what police suspect was a retaliatory attack by a Dassanech group.
Some of the injured were evacuated, and authorities confirmed that security teams are on the ground to gather further details about the incident.
Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati stated that additional personnel have been sent to the area to ensure the safety of local residents.
“We are awaiting more information on the attack,” Ombati said.
