Gov’t Loses Sh 144.2 Million in SGR Revenue Drop

The government experienced a loss of Sh 144.2 million in revenue between August and September 2024, due to a decrease in the number of passengers using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

According to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the number of SGR passengers dropped from 281,683 in August to 175,901 in September 2024. This led to a decline in revenue from Sh 440.6 million to Sh 296.4 million.

KNBS also reported in its Leading Economic Indicators report that the volume of cargo transported by the SGR fell from 582.4 thousand tonnes to 512.5 thousand tonnes. However, revenue from cargo transport saw a slight increase, reaching Sh 1.2 billion during the same period.

In terms of the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR), passenger numbers decreased from 240,026 in August to 231,684 in September 2024, with revenue from MGR passenger traffic dropping from Sh 13.7 million to Sh 12.4 million.

The KNBS report further noted that the total cargo handled at the Port of Mombasa dropped from 3.8 million metric tonnes in October 2024 to 3.5 million metric tonnes in November 2024. Both export and import volumes declined, with exports falling from 398.2 thousand metric tonnes to 379.6 thousand metric tonnes, and imports dropping from 2.8 million metric tonnes to 2.5 million metric tonnes.

On a positive note, transshipment volumes increased from 567.4 thousand metric tonnes to 591.8 thousand metric tonnes, while restows volume grew from 11.1 thousand metric tonnes to 12.4 thousand metric tonnes during the same period.
