Man Jumps Into River to Save Friend, Both Die

A tragic rescue attempt turned fatal after two men drowned in River Athi in Athi River, Machakos County.

Police said the incident occurred on May 24, 2026, at around 3.30 pm within Athi River South Sub-County.

According to investigators, Bernard Mutinda Mumo reportedly drowned while swimming in the river.

In an effort to rescue him, 27-year-old Dorminic Nzioki Kaluki removed his clothes and jumped into the water, but he also drowned during the attempt.

Police officers and local residents responded to the scene and began retrieval operations. Kaluki’s body was later recovered and taken to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Search teams were still looking for Mumo’s body by Monday.

In another separate drowning incident, police in Bamburi launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was found at the beach.

The case was reported on May 24, 2026, after beach operators discovered the lifeless body along the shoreline at around 10.45 am and informed authorities.

Police who visited the scene established that the deceased was an unidentified African man believed to be about 25 years old.

Investigators said the body appeared to have been swept ashore by ocean waves and had no visible physical injuries.

After processing the scene, officers moved the body to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and an autopsy.

The incidents add to the growing number of drowning cases reported in recent months, many of them linked to heavy flooding that has also displaced numerous families.

Police said several people are still missing following similar incidents, with investigations and search operations continuing in different areas.
