The victim, Constable Raphael Kimilu Wambua of the General Service Unit (GSU), was with his brother when he got into a confrontation with another constable around 1:30 am on Saturday, February 22, near Naivas in Ruaraka.

According to witnesses, the two officers and Wambua’s brother were walking home from a nightclub when the argument turned into a physical altercation. The other constable then drew his weapon and shot Wambua.

After the incident, the constable tried to flee, but bystanders caught him and subjected him to mob justice. He was later rescued by officers from the Ruaraka Police Station who were on night patrol.

The constable was taken to the hospital, while Wambua’s body was transferred to Kenyatta University Mortuary.

The rise in deaths among police officers in recent years has been linked to mental health issues. To address this, the police have introduced counseling services, and the National Police Service Commission has set up a unit focused on tackling these challenges.

This new unit will manage outreach programs designed to prevent mental health crises and substance abuse among officers, according to officials.
