Police Destroy 12,000 litres of Illicit Brew in Kendubay

A multi-agency security team has destroyed more than 12,000 litres of illicit alcohol in a major operation in Maguti, Kendubay, Homa Bay County.

The October 2, 2025, crackdown was led by officers from Kendubay Police Station in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) and targeted illegal brewers along the shores of Lake Victoria.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the team seized and destroyed thousands of litres of Kangara — a traditional brew used in distilling illegal spirits — alongside assorted brewing equipment.

In a statement, the NPS said the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to eliminate illicit alcohol in the region, citing the dangers it poses to public health, safety, and social order.

“The National Police Service commends the officers and partner agencies for their commitment to the fight against illicit alcohol. These operations will continue until the menace is eradicated,” the statement read, while urging members of the public to report such activities.

Authorities noted that the crackdown is part of a wider national campaign to dismantle illegal alcohol networks, which have been blamed for social, health, and economic challenges in several counties.

The Kendubay raid follows similar operations elsewhere in Nyanza. Recently, police in Kisumu destroyed more than 200 litres of illicit brew after raiding a concealed storage site in Kisumu Central. Officers acting on a tip-off uncovered jerricans, drums of Kangara, and a stash of chang’aa hidden in a thicket.
