Newly Launched Expressway Exit to Expedite CBD Access

The city center exit of the Nairobi Expressway is now open for motorists, following its trial launch by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

The newly opened Haile Selassie Exit Plaza, located at Greenpark, features five toll lanes and is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and expedite travel between Capital and Haile Selassie Roundabout. The exit aims to provide swift access to Nairobi CBD, Upper Hill, and Ngong Road.

Murkomen highlighted that the Expressway’s value was previously underutilized due to the distant exit from the CBD, emphasizing the importance of serving the heart of government offices, including the offices of the President, Deputy President, Parliament, and Judiciary.

In addition to the Greenpark Exit project, the Roads Ministry plans to enhance the Museum Hill Exit by adding two more lanes, increasing it from three to five lanes.

Describing the Nairobi Expressway as a successful example of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), Murkomen emphasized its role in reducing travel time from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi from two hours to 20 minutes without imposing costs on taxpayers. The project has also emerged as a significant job creator, providing over 500 permanent jobs.

Murkomen expressed the country’s interest in pursuing more PPP-modeled projects to ease the credit burden and mentioned upcoming initiatives such as the planned dualling of the Rironi-Mau Summit road, long-term projects like the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, Athi River-Namanga highways, Kisumu-Isibania, and Kiambu Road.
