Big Win for Motorists: Petrol and Diesel Prices Reduced

EPRA has announced a drop in fuel prices, cutting the cost of Super Petrol by Sh9.37 and diesel by Sh10.21 per litre after a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT).

In the new pricing, Super Petrol will retail at Sh197.60 per litre, while diesel will go for Sh196.63, with kerosene prices remaining unchanged. The regulator said the adjustment follows Legal Notice No. 70 of April 15, 2026, in which the National Treasury lowered VAT from 13% to 8%.

The revised pump prices will take effect from April 16 to May 14, 2026, after EPRA recalculated the maximum retail rates. It also noted that the subsidy on kerosene has dropped from Sh108.10 to Sh96.56 per litre.

The price cuts come shortly after an earlier April–May review in which fuel costs had risen sharply, with petrol and diesel increasing by Sh28.69 and Sh40.30 per litre respectively, while kerosene remained unchanged.

At the time, pump prices in Nairobi had been set at Sh206.97 for petrol, Sh206.84 for diesel, and Sh152.78 for kerosene for the same pricing cycle.

EPRA attributed previous price changes to shifts in global oil costs, taxes, and exchange rates, noting that VAT had earlier been adjusted from 16% to 13% to cushion consumers. The government had also planned to use about Sh6.2 billion from the Petroleum Development Levy Fund to stabilise prices.

The regulator added that fuel delivered by One Petroleum via the MT Paloma was not included in the pricing calculations.

EPRA maintains that its pricing model is guided by market factors such as international oil prices, exchange rates, taxes, and distribution costs, while aiming to keep fuel prices stable for consumers.
