Speaking after observing three cargo vessels offloading goods at the port at the same time, Chirchir termed the development a strong indication that the LAPSSET vision is steadily becoming a reality.

“Lamu Port is no longer a projection — it is up and running,” Chirchir stated.

Developed under the LAPSSET Corridor Development Authority blueprint, the new deep-sea port is designed to work alongside the Port of Mombasa by reducing congestion, expanding trade routes, and stimulating economic growth in Northern Kenya.

The port is being linked with airports, railway lines, oil transport systems, and planned resort cities, positioning it as a key pillar in Kenya’s broader modernization agenda.

Chirchir noted that with Phase I berths now in use and cargo volumes expected to reach 1.2 million TEUs by 2027, the facility will significantly ease the burden on Mombasa.

He added that Lamu Port will also serve as a crucial trade gateway for Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the wider Horn of Africa, boosting Kenya’s standing in international maritime commerce.
