Nine individuals perished following a matatu accident near Katangi Market on the Kitui-Machakos road. Among the deceased were an adolescent aged 9 and eight adults.
Confirming the tragedy, Machakos Health Executive Daniel Yumbya stated that the mishap involved a 41-seater matatu. “Eight fatalities occurred instantly, with the ninth passing away upon arrival at Machakos County Referral Hospital,” he added.
Thirty other passengers sustained severe injuries and received urgent medical attention at various healthcare facilities in the vicinity. Yumbya noted that out of the 18 injured individuals admitted to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, five were in critical condition.
The ill-fated matatu was reportedly transporting charcoal at the time of the Monday afternoon incident, as per eyewitness accounts. Approximately 30 sacks of charcoal were observed scattered at the accident site post-collision.
