Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has decided to exempt all medical charges for the victims of Monday’s tragedy in Katangi along the Kitui-Machakos Road, as announced by Machakos County Health CEC Daniel Yumbya.
The incident, which resulted in the loss of nine lives, involved a 41-seater matatu traveling from Kitui to Machakos.
Eight individuals, including seven adults and one child, lost their lives immediately, while the driver passed away upon arrival at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.
Dr. Yumbya stated on Tuesday that a total of 35 patients were admitted to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, with four of them in critical condition, identified by their inability to communicate.
Twenty-four other injured individuals are also undergoing treatment for severe injuries but are in stable condition.
Additionally, Yumbya confirmed that all medical personnel who were off-duty have been called back to duty.
“All relatives of the affected victims will need to first visit a designated counseling desk, as the casualty ward is currently restricted to visitors,” added the CECM.
