KUPPET Slams Parents Over School Lockouts

KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori has urged parents to take more responsibility for their children’s academic performance instead of resorting to protests and school lockouts when results fall short.

Speaking on a local TV station, Misori criticized the growing trend of parents demonstrating over poor exam results, emphasizing that guardians play a crucial role in supporting their children’s education.

“I condemn parents locking schools and protesting over results. Parents also have a responsibility to act,” he said, highlighting the need for shared accountability between families and schools.

Misori argued that schools should be evaluated based on their capacity and resources rather than labels such as national or extra-county schools.

“We haven’t defined schools by what they actually do, but rather by status, which fuels inequality and puts unnecessary pressure on certain institutions,” he noted.

He also pointed out that teacher shortages remain a major factor affecting education quality nationwide. The government, he said, must ensure that schools have enough teachers to match their student populations.

“The government must provide adequate staff for the number of students in schools. Otherwise, parents will continue crowding a few schools perceived as top-performing,” Misori warned.

The KUPPET chief also criticized the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for poor planning in teacher deployment, which contributes to the perception that some schools are superior, prompting parents to compete for limited places.

He further expressed concern about the stigma faced by day schools, questioning why students and teachers in these institutions are often undervalued despite educators receiving the same training as those in boarding schools.

“There’s a problem with how day schools are perceived. Teachers went through the same universities—why should there be discrimination?” he asked.
