According to authorities, the weapon had been snatched from a police constable attached to Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa’s security team during the burial at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).
The officer reported that rowdy youths surrounded him and other officers as they escorted the governor to his vehicle, and one grabbed the pistol before fleeing into the crowd.
The chaotic scenes during the high-profile funeral also saw several mourners lose personal belongings to pickpockets and imposters posing as mourners.

Security was later reinforced after some attendees forced their way into Opoda Farm, where the burial was taking place, disrupting proceedings until order was restored.
The four suspects are in custody awaiting interrogation and arraignment.
