MCK Condemns Siaya Journalists’ Brawl Which Left The Star’s Reporter Injured

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has expressed its disapproval of a physical altercation involving three journalists in Siaya County on Sunday, resulting in one journalist being injured.

MCK’s CEO, David Omwoyo, released a statement on Tuesday condemning the incident, emphasizing that such violent behavior among journalists from The Star newspaper, K24 television, and Royal Media Services undermines their professional integrity.

Omwoyo stated, “The Council unequivocally condemns all forms of violence, including those perpetrated by members of the press against their own or on members of the public. Journalists resorting to physical fights and engaging in slander not only jeopardizes their professional credibility but also undermines the principles of responsible journalism.”

The Council cautioned media outlets against presenting one-sided narratives of the event, particularly after The Star published an article on the incident. Omwoyo urged the journalists involved to seek mediation or other conflict resolution methods to address underlying issues and prevent future violence.

Additionally, he encouraged media houses to refrain from publishing biased stories, as it contributes to confusion and obscures facts during conflicts.

MCK claimed to have conducted an investigation into the matter and recommended disciplinary measures for those involved. The council urged relevant media organizations to conduct comprehensive investigations and take appropriate disciplinary action, warning that accredited journalists engaging in such altercations risk losing their registration with the Council.

Omwoyo emphasized that journalists bear the responsibility to uphold integrity and decorum, even in the face of aggression.
