BAT Kenya Secures Top Employer Status in Africa

BAT (British American Tobacco) Kenya has earned the distinction of being named the top employer in Kenya and across Africa, marking the seventh consecutive time the company has received this recognition.

This recognition extends globally, as the BAT Group secured Top Employer certification in 35 countries worldwide, spanning Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Notably, BAT was one of only 17 companies to achieve Global Top Employer certification in 2024.

Wendilene Balie, Head of Talent, Culture, and Inclusion at BAT Kenya, expressed delight at the recognition, emphasizing the company’s commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture. The Top Employer certification evaluates employer practices across six human resource domains and 20 topics, including people strategy, work environment, talent acquisition, learning, well-being, diversity, and inclusion.

David Plink, CEO of the Top Employers Institute, highlighted BAT’s global commitment to its employees during challenging times. Plink noted that BAT’s consistency in people practices across the globe places it among an exclusive group of companies that have achieved a global certification through the Top Employers Programme.

The Top Employers Institute, a global authority on recognizing excellence in people practices, administers the Certification Programme, validating and certifying companies as preferred employers. Established three decades ago, the institute has certified over 1600 organizations in 120 countries/regions.

BAT, which began operations in Kenya in 1907, engages in tobacco farming, processing, manufacturing, and the sale of tobacco and nicotine products without tobacco. The company has approximately 5,000 shareholders, with around 4,000 being local shareholders.
