Motorists to Pay Sh8 Per Kilometre on Rironi–Mau Summit Expressway

Motorists will be charged Sh8 per kilometre to use the Rironi–Mau Summit Expressway once the road is expanded into a dual carriageway, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.

According to KeNHA, the 175-kilometre project will be jointly developed and managed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

“The financial evaluation indicates that the CRBC–NSSF proposal was the most affordable, offering a toll rate of Sh8 per kilometre compared to the Sh10 proposed by Hi-Speed Road & Bridge International Engineering Co. Ltd,” KeNHA stated in official documents.

The expressway, linking Nairobi, Nakuru, and Mau Summit, will cost approximately Sh90 billion and is expected to be completed by June 2027. The new cost is significantly lower than the Sh190 billion earlier quoted by a French consortium whose contract was revoked by President William Ruto over budgetary concerns.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi earlier emphasized that expanding the highway into a dual carriageway would help ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity to western Kenya.

“We have invested in rural road networks, yet a key national route like the Nairobi–Nakuru highway remained a single lane. Upgrading it to a dual carriageway will enable faster and safer travel for all road users,” Mbadi said.
