Peter Mutharika was president until he was voted out in 2020

Malawi’s Former President Mutharika Opens Wide Lead in Vote Tally

Former Malawi President Peter Mutharika has surged ahead in the country’s presidential election, with provisional results from two-thirds of districts showing him in a commanding position.

The 85-year-old has so far secured about 66% of valid votes, while incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera, 70, trails with roughly 24%.

Notably, Mutharika is leading even in areas traditionally seen as Chakwera strongholds, including the capital Lilongwe and Nkhotakota.

Chakwera’s allies, however, remain optimistic that once results from the remaining districts—particularly rural zones around Lilongwe and Dedza—are announced, his tally will improve and possibly force a run-off.

To win outright, a candidate must secure over 50% of the total vote. The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has until Wednesday to declare the final results.

Two districts where Mutharika is favoured have had their results withheld pending verification. MEC said it is cross-checking tally sheets to ensure transparency and accuracy, recalling that Mutharika’s 2019 win was annulled by the constitutional court due to irregularities.

Chakwera went on to win the 2020 re-run, but his presidency has been marred by economic hardships, including soaring inflation, food and fuel shortages, and recurring blackouts.
