Residents near the Malaba and Malakisi rivers in Teso North sub-county, Busia County, are grappling with significant losses after heavy rains caused devastating floods, wiping out their crops.
The hardest-hit areas include Amoni, Akiriamas, and Akiriamasit, where both homes and large swathes of farmland have been destroyed.
Locals are now urging the government to provide emergency relief, including food aid, and to construct embankments to help prevent future flooding.
“We have repeatedly asked the Red Cross and the government for help, but we’ve seen little support. We are now asking for urgent assistance,” said one affected resident.
Area MCA Ronald Ochalu has called for immediate intervention, advising residents to move to safer areas.
“Residents in flood-prone regions must take precautions and relocate to higher ground to avoid further disasters. Around 75 families in Akiriamasit have been directly affected, with over 150 people impacted overall,” he said.
