In a statement on Wednesday, UASU said lecturers would down tools unless the university pays the arrears at the agreed 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rates and fully implements the Return-To-Work Formula signed on November 30, 2024.
The union is also demanding that clauses on staff review, promotions, and retirement age under the national CBA be honoured, alongside the protection of workers’ rights as outlined in Article 41 and Chapter 4 of the Constitution.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga warned that the strike would start on Wednesday, August 30, 2025, if the demands are not met, and said lecturers would not resume work until the agreement is fully enforced.
The notice has been copied to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and other relevant authorities.

The Moi University chapter, led by Ojuki Nyabuta, accused the institution’s management of ignoring signed agreements despite repeated engagements. The university, which has over 1,000 lecturers, has been grappling with financial woes and plans to lay off more than 2,000 workers due to financial distress.
Nyabuta said lecturers had exercised patience, but the continued failure to honour CBA deals had left them with no option but to strike.
