Gov’t Cracks Down on Night-Time School Bus Travel

The government has launched a nationwide crackdown on school buses operating at night, citing widespread violations of the Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2017, according to Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok.

The law, which restricts school transport to daylight hours, was enacted after a series of fatal school bus accidents to improve student road safety.

Bitok directed all regional, county, and sub-county education directors to begin strict enforcement immediately. “Any school or individual flouting this law will face legal consequences,” he warned.

Speaking during the 97th Kenya National Music Festivals in Meru, Bitok emphasized that the law applies across the country, not just to institutions involved in the festival.

“This isn’t about music events — it’s a national law. We will not compromise on the safety of our learners,” he said.

Bitok also announced that funds for student transport and accommodation for the festival would be released without delay after talks with the Sports Fund CEO.

In efforts to boost Kenya’s performing arts, Bitok revealed plans to create an international platform for top student performers beyond the State Gala, saying the proposal would be presented to the President.

“Kenya’s best should be seen on global stages — this will be part of the President’s cultural legacy,” he added.

The PS also issued a firm warning to teachers accused of exploiting students during the festivals.

“This is a children’s event. Any form of abuse or endangerment will be met with swift action. We will not tolerate predators among our learners,” he declared.

Bitok further encouraged support for talent monetization, especially for students from less privileged backgrounds.

“Let’s go beyond celebration and help our young people earn from their creativity — without exploitation,” he urged.
