Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has clarified that the symbolic declaration of June 25 as a public holiday is solely intended to honour and mourn the young lives lost during the 2024 anti-government protests, not to incite unrest.

Speaking at a church service in Kilifi, Kalonzo urged Kenyans to mark the day with candlelight vigils outside Parliament in remembrance of the fallen Gen Z protesters, and called on religious leaders to join the solemn commemoration.
He proposed naming the day “Gen Z Liberation Day” as a tribute to the youth-led fight for justice, accountability, and economic reforms.
Despite not having legal authority to declare public holidays, the opposition’s call for a nationwide work boycott could disrupt normal activities.
In response, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah warned that the government would not allow such actions to divide the nation along generational lines, insisting that only the Ministry of Interior can officially declare public holidays.
