The two were apprehended after the lorry owner filed a report at Mlolongo Police Station, claiming the vehicle—carrying 12 tonnes of galvanised wire from Mombasa to Nairobi—had been hijacked on May 22.
According to the driver and conductor, a white Toyota Probox intercepted them near Maungu, after which assailants took the lorry and tied them up in a nearby bush. They also alleged they had picked up two hitchhikers in Samburu who turned out to be the attackers.
However, investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Voi revealed inconsistencies. GPS data showed the lorry stopped in Samburu for only two seconds—too brief to pick up anyone.
Additionally, the crew conducted mobile money transactions in Voi after the supposed robbery, casting further doubt.
One of the suspects made two mobile money deposits totaling Sh3,500 on the day of the alleged heist. Both were arrested on June 4 and taken to Voi, where they face charges of giving false information to a public officer and stealing by a servant.
Police are still searching for the missing lorry and are investigating whether the incident was orchestrated for profit.
Authorities say highway theft and fraudulent cases are on the rise, especially targeting goods in transit, prompting more tech-driven surveillance on the busy corridor.
