The most recent storm erupted after Wiper-nominated MCA Jacinta Mwoni accused Mbai’s allies of orchestrating a physical assault against her during a funeral in Kitui East. The incident has sparked outrage among political leaders, civil rights advocates, and the wider public, reviving concerns about the MP’s combative style and history of confrontation.

Funeral Turns Violent

What began as a solemn occasion quickly turned into a political battleground. During the burial of her uncle, Mwoni took to the podium and used the opportunity to express her support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2027 presidential bid, while also criticizing the leadership of President William Ruto.

According to Mwoni, her remarks were immediately met with hostility. A group of men, allegedly affiliated with MP Mbai, stormed the stage and physically assaulted her in full view of mourners. She was whisked away from the chaos with visible bruises and later called a press conference to demand accountability.

“This was not just an attack on me, but on every woman who dares to speak her mind in politics,” Mwoni said. “MP Mbai must apologize publicly. This is gender-based political violence, and it must be condemned by all.”

Mbai’s Reaction: “Freedom After Speech Not Guaranteed”

Though MP Mbai was not present at the funeral, his subsequent remarks during Madaraka Day celebrations only fueled the outrage. In what many have labeled a chilling message, Mbai warned:

“You have the freedom of speech, but we will not assure you of your freedom after speech.”

The statement has sparked a national debate, with critics saying it reflects an attempt to stifle dissent and intimidate opposition voices. Legal experts and civil society groups have pointed out that such rhetoric is not only undemocratic but potentially criminal.

“The Constitution protects every Kenyan’s right to speak their mind,” said lawyer Martha Kilonzo. “Threatening citizens for exercising that right is unacceptable, especially from an elected official.”

A Pattern of Violence?

This is not the first time MP Mbai’s name has been associated with violent behavior. In July 2023, he made headlines after assaulting a Kenya Power employee who was disconnecting an illegal power connection at his Kitengela residence. The incident, which was captured on video, went viral and led to his arrest. He was released on a KSh 50,000 bond, and his firearm was confiscated.

The case was referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), but there has been little public follow-up since.

Political Fallout

The Wiper Party has strongly condemned the attack on Mwoni and called for justice. In a press statement, the party described the assault as “an act of thuggery and misogyny aimed at silencing brave women leaders.”

Political observers now believe that Mbai’s repeated controversies could damage his standing ahead of the next election cycle, especially if legal consequences follow.

“Mbai has crossed several red lines,” said political analyst Dennis Mutua. “If he continues on this path, not only will he lose political legitimacy, but he may also face serious criminal charges.”
