Speaking during an interview on the Obina TV Show at his Wamunyoro home on May 16, Gachagua emphasized the importance of integrity and legal adherence among the incoming electoral commissioners.
“I call on the IEBC nominees to act in the best interest of the country. Don’t try to impose leaders on Kenyans—it won’t work,” he cautioned.
His comments come ahead of the National Assembly’s scheduled vetting of the IEBC nominees on May 26. President William Ruto has nominated Erastus Edung Ethekon for IEBC chair, alongside Anne Nderitu, Moses Mukwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor, Francis Odhiambo, and Fahima Abdalla as commissioners.
The names have been submitted to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, which is currently accepting public feedback on the candidates’ suitability.
Gachagua clarified he does not oppose the nominees, reiterating that power ultimately rests with the voters.
“I have no issue with the IEBC. The Supreme Court made it clear in 2013 that the voter’s voice at the ballot box is final,” he said.
Despite his stance, the IEBC’s reconstitution process is facing legal pushback, with several court petitions challenging the impartiality of some nominees.
Gachagua also commented on the emerging political influence of Generation Z, calling them a transformative force ahead of the 2027 elections.
“This Gen Z is a game-changer—non-tribal, principled, and not swayed by handouts. They are registering for ID cards and preparing to vote,” he noted.
He has since launched the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), aimed at uniting the Mount Kenya region and challenging President Ruto’s grip on the region’s vote.
