During a Sunday interdenominational service and church fundraiser in Nandi Hills, the MPs challenged opponents of the list, particularly Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, to prepare for a political face-off in Parliament.
The lawmakers criticized Kalonzo for rejecting the nominees, accusing him of insincerity despite his involvement in shaping IEBC-related laws and the selection panel.
If ratified, the new IEBC team’s priority will be to clear a backlog of pending by-elections that have left some constituencies without elected representatives for over two years.
Among the leaders present were Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Chelilim, Nandi Deputy Governor Yulita Mitei, Senator Aron Cheruiyot (Kericho), and MPs including Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu), Silvanus Osoro (Mugirango North), and Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), among others.
Senator Cheruiyot emphasized Kalonzo’s past participation in electoral law reforms and panel appointments, while Osoro accused Kalonzo of habitual opposition to government initiatives.
Ichung’wah labelled Kalonzo self-serving and obstructive, while Japheth Nyakundi urged him to mobilize his side and engage constructively in Parliament rather than holding divisive press conferences.
Farouk Kibet, a close aide to President William Ruto and the event’s chief guest, clarified that the President had no role in picking the IEBC nominees, as the list was submitted by an independent panel.
He stressed that the IEBC’s duty is to manage elections—not influence outcomes.
