National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has come to President William Ruto’s defense following public backlash over the nomination of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson and commissioners.

Wetang’ula clarified that the President was simply fulfilling his constitutional mandate by forwarding the selection panel’s shortlist of candidates to Parliament for approval.
Speaking via Facebook on Sunday, May 11, 2025, he emphasized that Parliament—through the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC)—holds the final say on whether the nominees are approved or rejected.
“The president is not unilaterally appointing commissioners; he is part of a constitutional process. Any Kenyan with concerns can present them to the committee,” Wetang’ula stated.
“We must move away from opposing every initiative just because it didn’t originate from our side. Constructive leadership demands objectivity and maturity.”
Wetang’ula also dismissed criticism of Ruto’s leadership, saying the President inherited a struggling economy plagued by stalled infrastructure, a strained healthcare system, and issues in the education sector.

He pointed to progress in streamlining the CBC education curriculum and ongoing reforms in the health sector, notably the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA), aimed at achieving Universal Health Coverage.
“Previously, NHIF favored private hospitals, even though public facilities serve the majority. With SHA now in place, Kenyans are already seeing the benefits,” he noted, urging the public to register and experience the system firsthand.
