Car Dealer Khalif Kairo Seeks Passport Release for US Trip

City car dealer Khalif Kairo appeared in court on Tuesday, asking a Magistrates court to release his passport so he could travel to the United States for seven days.

Represented by his lawyer, Davidson Makau, Kairo told Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina that he needed the travel documents to attend a fundraiser in the US. He assured the court he was not a flight risk and would return after his trip.

In response, the prosecution stated that Kairo must provide the court with full details of his trip, including his intended departure date, before any decision on the passport release could be made. Magistrate Onyina ordered the matter to be mentioned again on January 31 to confirm that the required documents had been filed to support the release of the passport.

Kairo was charged earlier this month for failing to fulfill car sale agreements and faces two counts of cheating under section 315 of the Penal Code. Each charge has a cash bail of Sh1 million or an alternative bond.

In one of the charges, Kairo is accused of using fraudulent methods to induce Jeff Munane to pay Sh2.1 million between July 10 and July 25, 2024, for the importation of a Honda Vezel hybrid from Japan. However, he allegedly never delivered the vehicle, and the payment was made through his company, Kai & Kairo Limited.

Kairo is also accused of committing a similar offense against Dona Okoth, who transferred Sh2.98 million into the company’s KCB bank account between July 29, 2024, and November 16, 2024, for the purchase of a Subaru Outback, which was never delivered.
