The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, briefly attended the Palm Sunday service at the Vatican earlier today, before returning to his residence.
The leader, who appeared cheerful, greeted the cardinals and waved to the faithful who arrived to attend the important service marking the beginning of the Easter season which will be celebrated next Friday until Monday next week.
The Easter season commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and is an important time of worship for Christians of various denominations around the world.
Jesus Christ died on the cross on Friday and rose again on Sunday when he ascended into heaven, according to religious scriptures.
During Palm Sunday, believers march through the streets carrying palm branches, led by religious leaders, but this year Pope Francis was unable to perform the service due to his health condition.
Pope Francis, 88, was hospitalized in Rome for five weeks after suffering lung problems that doctors feared were life-threatening in a critical condition that was witnessed twice during his hospitalization.
He was allowed to return home on March 23, with his doctors saying that he is expected to stay at home for two months once his health improves.
