Opinion: December Tournaments Are Made To Benefit Politicians And Not Our Youths.

By: Mwalimu Muthisya

It has become a routine and practice for our elected leaders to come up with football competion in their respective Wards and Constituencies every year! In actualizing this, they bring together Football Clubs all to compete for a cup/cups which are called or named by the names of the organisers (political leaders).

This is how there are so and so Football and or Volleyball cups. The said leaders keep on holding such tournaments every year for the period of time they are on their respective seats.

It is good to keep our youths engaged but what next after the last four teams take part in the last competition? In short, what happens after the final game of the tournament? On this, some of us may be tempted to argue that such tournaments are to identify the talents in our region, this is welcome but what next? After identifying the talents in our youths, what next for them?

To me, the leaders only do this for their political expediency and have nothing good for the youths in the respective electoral units. This is all a step to psyche the voters and the youths.

These leaders who organize for their tournaments should be calling upon the coaches of the Premier League Clubs in the country to come scouting for players to recruit to their National Clubs.

In the case of athletics, they should do the same, that is, bringing National Athletics Coaches to their tournaments so as to identify our youths who would possibly be recruited to the National Teams, Athletics, Football and Volleyball.

I challenge our elected leaders to stop their cosmetic design of politics and become real to the needs of us. They should stop hosting such tournaments only to leave our potential sportsmen in the middle of nowhere waiting to take part again in the coming years.

What do you think about such individualistic tournaments?
