A primary suspect has been arrested after DNA tests confirmed that the body parts discovered in River Sagana, Kirinyaga County, belong to 32-year-old Lucy Wamaitha, who disappeared in January.
Wamaitha vanished while on a work assignment with a colleague. Authorities confirmed the identity of the remains through DNA testing, which matched the remains to those of Wamaitha’s mother, Nancy Wambui.
The victim, who was employed by a Kiambu-based NGO, had traveled to Meru County with her boss and a workmate on January 16 but was never seen again. Her body parts were discovered in a bag on January 22.
She was last seen dining with a man in Embu town before her phone was switched off later that afternoon. When her remains were found, they were mutilated and partially burned, intensifying suspicions of foul play. Notably, her head was missing.
The motive behind the crime has not yet been determined.
Authorities have identified a man in custody as the primary suspect in the ongoing murder investigation, which is now being handled by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide unit.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in Thika court on Monday, March 24, to face murder charges. The family is calling for justice.
Thika police chief Lawrence Muchangi confirmed that they have a leading suspect and stated that authorities are engaging with him to uncover additional details, including the possible location of other missing body parts.
“We are still working to determine whether he acted alone and to recover any other missing body parts,” Muchangi added.
