Senator Ledama Ole Kina has raised concerns about the shortlist of candidates for the position of chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), suggesting that they are unsuitable for the role.

He argued that the candidates would lack the independence needed and could easily be compromised, lacking the necessary integrity.
During an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, he criticized the list of candidates, stating, “This is a completely wrong list of people to lead the country toward better elections.” He described them as individuals who would simply be “yes people,” unable to act independently or uphold ethical standards.
Senator Ledama also questioned the candidates’ qualifications, pointing out that the IEBC needs a younger leader who can ensure transparency. He emphasized, “These are individuals who have been recycled from various positions. It’s time for a radical young person to take charge of the commission.”
In the same interview, Tetu Member of Parliament Geoffrey Wandeto expressed doubts about the candidates’ ability to inspire confidence among voters due to their past leadership roles. He said, “I don’t know if we’ve run out of candidates. The people on the list seem to align with one side of the political spectrum.”

Wandeto also voiced concerns about the potential for a candidate who might simply comply with pressure from the highest levels of government, stating, “My fear is that the process might result in someone who can’t say no, even if pressured to say ‘yes.'”
The IEBC Selection Panel began public interviews for the position of chairperson on Monday, March 24, with the process set to run for three days at the College of Insurance in Nairobi.
