The fire occurred in a section of the grassland near 75 Airport North Road, but the Authority assured that all airport operations, including flight schedules, passenger services, and cargo handling, remained unaffected.

A coordinated response from KAA’s Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service, the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), and the Nairobi County Fire Unit is underway to control the fire.

“KAA confirms that the fire is confined to non-operational grassland areas and has not impacted any critical infrastructure or operational zones at JKIA,” the Authority said in a statement on Friday.

Flights continued to land at the busy airport while firefighters worked to control the blaze, which had already scorched hundreds of acres along the airport’s perimeter.

Onlookers gathered along Airport North Road to witness the event, with reports stating that the fire started around 7 p.m.

“The Authority will release further updates as more details become available.”

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident, stating that they had sent an emergency team to the scene.

“Emergency response teams are on-site managing a grassland fire within JKIA along Airport North Road, Nairobi County. Efforts are in progress to contain the fire and stop it from spreading,” the Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.

Established in 1991 by an Act of Parliament, the Kenya Airports Authority is an autonomous body responsible for managing Kenya’s airport system. KAA operates four international airports, four domestic airports, and several airstrips.

The main airports managed by KAA include: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Moi International Airport (MIA), Eldoret International Airport (EIA), Wilson Airport (WAP), and Kisumu International Airport (KIA).
