Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko shared an update on the matter, confirming that the initial stage of the procedure went well. A follow-up review has been scheduled.
“The first phase of Irene Wambua Mbithe’s artificial eye surgery was successfully carried out at Lions’ Firstsight Eye Hospital,” Sonko posted on X. “She will be reviewed today. We are praying for her swift recovery.”
Sonko got involved in Mbithe’s case after her story was highlighted on Citizen TV’s Shajara na Lulu program. During a live call on the show, he pledged to assist her in getting an artificial eye implant.
Mbithe underwent her first medical evaluation on Tuesday, April 8.
“True to our promise, my team accompanied Irene to Lions’ Firstsight Eye Hospital today for her check-up and assessment. The evaluation went smoothly, and she’s now set to undergo eye implant surgery on Friday morning,” Sonko added.
He also noted that legal proceedings are being initiated to seek compensation and hold those responsible accountable. Sonko mentioned he is working with lawyers and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to ensure justice is served.
Mbithe recounted that she was attacked by hyenas while fleeing from a trailer driver who had offered her a lift but later tried to assault her. She escaped when the vehicle stopped and ran toward a police roadblock the driver had previously passed without being stopped.
As she was fleeing, the hyenas attacked her. A cab driver who witnessed the incident attempted to scare the animals away by hooting, but they continued to drag her from the road. He alerted police officers nearby, who later found her injured in a bush.
