A middle-aged woman was captured on camera attempting to steal from an Mpesa agent, according to a video that surfaced online on Thursday, February 22nd, 2024.
Reports suggest that the woman tried to deceive the agent by using a phone number saved as “Safaricom.”
Upon entering the Mpesa agent’s premises, the woman attempted to withdraw funds from her Mpesa account. However, her intentions remained unclear to the attendant, who allowed her to proceed with her transactions.
Suspicion arose when the attendant did not receive a withdrawal confirmation on his end, prompting inquiries. Despite this, the woman insisted that she had received the confirmation and offered to show it to the attendant.
The situation escalated when the phone number saved as “Safaricom” made a call, and the woman asked the caller to contact them later, revealing that the caller claimed to be in Kamiti prison.
In an online video, a chaotic scene unfolds in the shop as a crowd questions the woman about her suspicious transactions.
The woman, visibly upset, denies the accusations and claims to be a student, while a male voice in the background presses her to disclose her identity.
The crowd ultimately suggests involving law enforcement authorities, citing a rise in Mpesa theft cases in the area.
