Ukambani-Born Bahraini Mutile Wins Gold in Paris Games 3,000m Steeplechase

At the Paris Games, Kenyan-born Bahraini Winfred Mutile Yavi claimed gold in the 3,000m steeplechase with a new Olympic record of 8:52.76.

Faith Cherotich, the former World Under-20 champion, secured third place with a season-best time of 8:55.15.

Cherotich’s performance earned Kenya its fourth medal, although her fellow Kenyan and world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech finished sixth with a time of 9:04.24, falling short of expectations.

Mutile outpaced defending champion Peruth Chemutai of Uganda, who took silver with a national record of 8:53.34, relinquishing her Tokyo Olympics title.

Cherotich, who recently turned 20, described her bronze medal as a significant achievement. She expressed satisfaction with her performance and motivation for future competitions.

Chepkoech attributed her subpar performance to ongoing pneumonia, which has affected her training and competition.

Despite her struggles, she expressed support for Cherotich and hopes for future success in the 5,000m.

Mutile, who did not initially expect to break the championship record, was thrilled with her unexpected bonus. She credited her strong finish and lessons learned from the Tokyo Olympics for her victory.

In the 1,500m final, Kenyans Timothy Cheruiyot and Brian Komen fell short, with Cheruiyot finishing 11th and Komen 12th.

American Cole Hocker delivered a dramatic finish to win, dashing Kenya’s hopes of ending a 16-year title drought in the event.
